Why Meditate?

by John Robson on July 21, 2011

Meditation is considered an essential practice for those who seek self-knowledge and self-mastery. Why? Basically, meditation brings us awareness of how our minds work. Over time, we become watchers, able to detach from the thoughts that play out in our minds and the emotions that arise in our bodies.

As we become a watcher of our lives, we can begin to break through the masks that have built up as our identity. It helps us see through our defenses and connect with unacknowledged and unloved aspects of ourselves. It opens us to higher mind and the voice of intuition.

With this detachment, we gain the freedom to choose whether or not to act on our thoughts and emotions. We learn to distinguish between objective reality and our mental and emotional dramas. Through meditation, we can find peace.
