It Takes Courage to Change!
“Man cannot discover new oceans until he has the courage to
lose sight of the shore.”
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Do you want some aspect of yourself to change?
Then prepare for the void!
A void is an empty space, a vacuum. In times of transition, we’re letting go of
old patterns but the new patterns have not yet been established. And so we find
the ground disappearing beneath our feet. It’s a time of floundering without
anything solid to cling to for security. And this is scary!
When we’re this uncomfortable, it’s hard not to turn back to what we’ve always
known, to do things the way we’ve always done them. But if we do, we don’t move
forward in our lives! If we want to grow, it’s crucial that we persevere through
this challenging time.
I (Patrice) know the void is a necessary part of change. Yet I’m still surprised
at how difficult it is to give myself the space to allow some new way of being
to manifest.
How do I support myself through the void?
-
I remind myself of the void’s nature: groundless,
confusing, uncomfortable, with pressures to return to old habits.
-
I try to be gentle with myself – it’s a time to
avoid challenges and extra tasks.
-
I reassure myself that the void is a necessary
step to change.
-
I stay firmly focused on my goal (if I have one).
-
I seek to be open to new possibilities and
insights.
We all experience the void at one time or another.
With resolve and patience, we will pass through the fog to a new chapter in our
lives. So hang in there. It’s worth it!
“It takes a lot of courage to release the
familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new. But there is no real security
in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security in the adventurous and
exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power.”
-- Alan Cohen
