Balancing the Inner and Outer
“Being and becoming are the yin and yang of our lives. One inner,
one outer. Today, we value becoming to the exclusion of being; we applaud human
becomings. The secret is balance.” -- Unknown source
So many people today are always in action. Busy all the time and
wanting immediate results, they never stop racing on their treadmills of life.
Yet we are not made to work that way.
Nature flows with a balanced rhythm of yin (female) and yang (male) energy
cycles. Give and receive. Intuit and do it. Take action and tune in once again
with reflection.
YIN energies support INNER work and reflection: inward focused, receptive,
emotional, intuitive, abstract, renewal and nurturing oriented.
YANG energies support OUTER work and doing: outward focused, assertive, logical,
practical and action oriented.
To be healthy, we need balance between the two. If you tend to be always on the
go, experiment with giving yourself some ‘down’ time for relaxation, reflection
and intuition. If you tend to be a thinker rather than a doer, play with some of
the tools below to spark you into implementing some of your ideas.
We not only need balance throughout the day. The play of yin/yang and
inner/outer energies also influence us over medium and longer terms. After a
long stretch of work (predominantly outer energy), you may need a sabbatical,
long vacation or a new plan for an extended immersion into yin or inner energy.
See if you can tune into which energy dominates at any given time. Then open to
consciously work with the energy that’s flowing. Use outer or yang energy to
move ahead on a project or goal. If you sense yin or inner energy at play, clear
some space in your calendar for alone time, reflection or playing.
Tap into the flow of the energy cycles and life will unfold more easily!
“The more balanced our lives, the more serene we feel.”
-- Ann Smith
“Your hand opens and closes and opens and closes. If it were always a fist or
always stretched open, you would be paralyzed. Your deepest presence is in every
small contracting and expanding, the two as beautifully balanced and coordinated
as bird wings.” -- Rumi
