In work and in life, we want to ensure we’re doing the right things before we
invest effort, time and money. At month end I completed an extensive review to
gain clarity about what’s important to me. Whenever large projects or decisions
are unfolding, I go on a retreat for a few days. I like to spend at least one or
two days on reflection and planning – and play!
There’s such power in balancing persistent focus with relaxation. I focus
intently on my need and then I take a complete break. I also use left brain
tools for rational thinking and then I play with right brain activities: I
journal, draw pictures and meditate on what is important.
When I follow this work/play cycle, things come into perspective. I sort the
grain from the chaff. I see what must be done first. I catch things that were
falling through the cracks and ideas I was about to lose. I identify what is
urgent versus what is important and find it easier to set priorities. I get a
strong sense of control and clarity. As this process unfolds, I feel
increasingly good, confident and energized to execute my plan.
When you have a major decision to make or a project to plan, take time to dwell
on it and then let it go – do something completely different. Play with this
back and forth process. If you have time, let your ideas integrate overnight. I
promise you – this works wonders for clarity and insights!
“Work is not always required … there is such a thing as sacred idleness, the
cultivation of which is now fearfully neglected.”
-- George MacDonald
“Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to
your work your judgment will be surer. Go some distance away because then the
work appears smaller and more of it can be taken in, at a glance and a lack of
harmony and proportion is more readily seen.”
-- Leonardo Da Vinci
