Weary of giving too much?

Recently I’ve heard two different women cry, “I’m tired of giving so much!”
This surprised me. It’s not often that people are strong and honest enough to
publicly express this. Our culture regards giving and serving others so highly
that it seems almost sacrilegious to claim that we’ve had enough.
But if we want to be healthy, we need to find balance in our lives. If we give
too much, we don’t give enough attention to receiving. For the highest good of
all, we need to care for ourselves as we also care for others.
I regularly ask myself these questions:
- How am I feeling right now?
- What do I want?
- How can I give that to myself?
In most cases, we don’t have to depend on others to serve our needs. We can
look after ourselves. Put some energy into that and the whole world benefits.
It’s only when we’re nurtured ourselves that we can be in a position to
genuinely nurture others. Attempting to serve other people when we’re drained of
energy and feeling increasingly resentful does not serve anyone well.
