The First Step to Healthy Relationships
“Right human relations is the only true peace.”
-- Alice A. Bailey
“All of life is relationship,” said Swami Rama. We
find our greatest meaning and rewards in relationships. At the same time, they
also bring us our greatest frustration, anger and grief.
Clearly, we have lots to learn about how to successfully connect with others.
Just as clearly, there is one primary and essential starting point. Miss this
first step and nothing else will work. What is it?
Build a healthy relationship with yourself!
I need to know who I am – what I need, want and truly love – before I can hope
to create a strong, deep and genuine connection with anyone else. Fortunately,
there’s no better way to learn about myself than through interaction with
others.
The key, though, is to keep my focus on how I am when I interact with others.
It’s so easy for me to get distracted in who you are and what you’re doing. Even
more importantly, I don’t want to get lost in who I think you want me to be, for
that’s a sure pathway to pain.
Know yourself – the key to happiness, on your own and with others!
“You cannot fake a relationship and feel right
with yourself or anyone else. Changing yourself to fit what you think other
people want doesn’t work. Pretending to be someone other than yourself only
broadens the distance between the person you are and the one with whom you’re
trying to establish closeness.”
-- Mary Manin Morrissey
“Before we can make friends with anyone else, we must first make friends with
ourselves.”
-- Eleanor Roosevelt
