Pondering Life Purpose
“The meaning of life is to give life
meaning.” -- Ken Hudgins3
Do we each have one unique role to play to ultimately fulfill our
lives? When people talk about life purpose, it often seems to be presented this
way.
I struggled for many years to identify my life purpose. Thanks to Eckhart Tolle,
my struggle has now ended. For he proposes that everyone shares a common life
purpose: to raise consciousness. This rings so true to me!
Doesn’t it make sense that our purpose is to grow as human beings, to expand our
understanding of ourselves and of life?
If life purpose involves how I grow to be more authentic, it embraces every
aspect of my life. It’s not just about work, about what I do. It’s just as much
about how I am as a human being.
Furthermore, this means that my life purpose evolves as I do. I’m being called
to open to new possibilities every moment of every day. How could I even dream
of limiting my focus to just one script?
So rather than struggle to define one unique Life Purpose, I now stop and
reflect on where I find purpose (small ‘p’) in life right now. What brings me
joy and meaning? What inspires me? What do I want to heal? When I follow these
signposts, my purpose looks after itself.
“We’re so engaged in doing things to achieve purposes of
outer value that we forget that the inner value, the rapture that is associated
with being alive, is what it’s all about.” -- Joseph Campbell
“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come
alive, and then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come
alive.” -- Harold Thurman Whitman
