4 Commitment Levels that Effect your Quality of Life

“Give life meaning through your commitments.” — Paul Reinert

How committed are you to what you do in your life?

Strong commitment reflects a path with heart. A path with heart fills us up with meaning, purpose and often joy. We truly live life when we care deeply and engage fully.

How engaged are you with the activities that fill your days? Consider these questions:

  1. How much do you do without commitment, where you are indifferent, easy going, just playing along or going through the motions?
  2. How much do you do for others through habit (possibly no commitment)? Through obligation (half-hearted commitment)? With devotion (full commitment)?
  3. Are there times where you are committed against something and use protest, revenge or manipulation to bring change?- instead of for something
  4. Where are you experiencing being fully committed to one or more activities so that with dedication and passion, you do whatever it takes to achieve your aims?

We can learn much about ourselves when we assess the depth of our commitment. As an example, identify something that is important to you. On a scale of 1 (low) – 10 (high), how would you rate your commitment level? If you are not 100% committed, you have energy leaks. They may show up in procrastination, indecision and lack of responsibility — all different forms of self sabotage. Perhaps you doubt the value of what you’re doing or your ability to handle the situation.

If you recognize that you are not fully committed to a venture, take time to explore your deeper thoughts and feelings. If you’re going to invest your time and energy in something, you want to ensure you are doing it in the best way at the best time for the best reasons. And if you find you can’t engage whole-heartedly in a project, it might be best to let it go. It’s all a way of making your life count.
