Let’s Get Talking!

Being a good conversationalist can make a big difference in how much we enjoy people. The more easily we can talk with others, the more rich life becomes. Connecting confidently with others really boosts our self-esteem.

But many of us fear meeting new people. When we’re too self conscious, our fear of being uncomfortable, put on the spot or embarrassed may keep us isolated.

Life can be better, though. As most of us share a deep need to connect meaningfully with others, we’ve written out some conversation starter tips that have been helpful to us. Connecting with others takes some skill and practice but there’s really not much to learn. It depends on attitude, more than anything.

Normally, people like to talk about themselves. And most people like to offer support to others if they are presented with the right topics and opportunities. Asking questions that meet these ends offers just one strategy that can smooth the way to a great discussion.

Over time, our goal is to be comfortable enough in the presence of other people, even strangers, that we can truly be present to them. The more we can move beyond superficial ‘small talk’ into conversations that are deeply meaningful, the more rewarding the connections become for everyone involved.
