Learning about awareness from a bike

“There is no end to the beauty for the person who is aware.”
-- Matthew Fox

Think back to when you first learned to ride a bike. Who taught you?

That was a trick question, actually. My dad was my supporter and cheer leader, but he didn’t really teach me to ride. In fact, no one can teach anyone else to ride. We have to do it all by ourselves – through awareness.

Recently, I heard David Neagle talk of awareness in terms of bike riding and I was so impressed with his example because it helps make the theory real. Awareness is a difficult concept to grasp until we’ve personally experienced it and its power. The bike story can give us a glimpse of understanding.

We teach ourselves to ride a bike when we become aware of how to balance our body on the bicycle. We have to experience this – no one can tell us how to do it. Similarly, we learn to swim when we become aware of the sensation of floating. Instructors may teach us different strokes but we won’t actually swim until we gain the experience and confidence – the self-knowledge – of floating in water.

The beauty of growing in awareness is that it dramatically expands our experience. Back to our bike story: I remember how exhilarating it was to discover how fast I could travel on a bike. I could go so much farther more quickly and more easily. This new mobility brought freedom and personal power to discover new places. I had so much more scope for learning. My world opened up – all because of the expanded awareness I integrated on my first solo bike ride.

And that’s just what happens every time we expand our awareness of who we are and what we want. We integrate the complexities and intricacies of life and, in our own unique way, shift to a new level. No one else can tell us how to do this. And it is difficult to explain. You just have to do it and experience it.

And then our world opens up. We begin to see brand new things! We see opportunities that may have been there all along but, lacking awareness, we weren’t able to see them. As Joseph Campbell says, “When you follow your bliss... doors will open where you would not have thought there would be doors, and where there wouldn’t be a door for anyone else.”

To higher awareness,

“I like thinking of possibilities. At any time, an entirely new possibility is liable to come along and spin you off in an entirely new direction. The trick, I’ve learned, is to be awake to the moment.”
-- Doug Hall
