As surprising as this is, we need tension in our lives. It’s the force of
personal evolution that sparks creativity and higher consciousness. Think about
this: if we’re not comfortable with a situation, we try to improve it, right?
Tension arises when we experience opposites. Tensions exist between new and old,
positive and negative, conscious and unconscious, mind and body, self and
environment, self and others, and personality and soul.
These opposites fight each other as each one struggles for dominance. Tension is
transformed – and we experience relief – when the two opposites are brought
together in balance and in wholeness.
To work constructively with tension, we need to pay attention. When we
become aware of tension, we can resolve it with the following process:
- Feel the tension that’s there.
- Identify the polarities: what you don’t want and what you want.
- Acknowledge the presence of the ‘negative’ – let go of resistance.
- Make space for each of them to be there together.
- Focus on a quality that would bring relief. (Eg. love, courage,
understanding)
Tension is necessary for growth, so open to work with it. Pay attention and
reveal and heal a tension.
“The most intense conflicts, if overcome, leave behind a sense of security
and calm that is not easily disturbed. It is just these intense conflicts and
their conflagration which are needed to produce valuable and lasting results.”
-- C.G. Jung
“Have a dialogue between the two opposing parts and you will find that they
always start out fighting each other until we come to an appreciation of
difference, ... a oneness and integration of the two opposing forces.”
-- Frederick Salomon Perls
“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”
-- Neale Donald Walsch
