Overwhelmed? Call on your right brain!
“It is while trying to get everything straight
in my head that I get confused.”
-- Mary Virginia Micka
Experienced any information overload lately? I have – especially after I
reviewed a few years’ worth of journals, ideas and insights.
Fortunately, our mind has ways to simplify masses of information and make some
sense of it. Here’s how it works.
Research has found that the left hemisphere of the brain will remember only 7 or
less items when presented with a list. Anything more and the left brain has a
hard time comprehending it.
This situation invites the brain’s right hemisphere to engage and use its big
picture, intuitive approach. The right brain will see the list from new
perspectives. It will perceive new relationships within the material from a
broader, more intuitive level.
So if you have what seems like too much information, then relax, let go of any
struggle to make sense of the stuff and let the right brain synthesize in its
own wholistic way. Overload the left brain and trust the right brain to sort
what’s most important from the myriad of details.
The right brain works at its own pace. Let it percolate. Give it space by doing
something completely different for a while. Periodically return to the material
to refresh the process then allow the right brain to do its work. This explains
the power of review. Watch the information come alive with more meaning.
Play with this. Explore new ways for your mind to serve you better.
“Genius …means little more than the faculty of perceiving in an inhabitual
way.”
-- William James
“Mastery of the mind opens avenues of hope.”
