“Spirituality means waking up. Most people, even though they don’t know it, are asleep.” – Anthony de Mello
What does it mean to ‘wake up’ spiritually? To wake up is to become conscious. Soul is who we are as consciousness, yet we live so much of our lives unconsciously. We are creatures of habit, so much so that we don’t even realize just how much our habits, our customs and our belief systems limit our experience of life. Our routines literally put us to sleep.
The spiritual path invites us to wake up. To question all that we have learned, all the assumptions upon which we base our thinking and our behaviour. To open to new perspectives and experiences of who we are and of what we can be and do. To open to new ways of connecting with the world and thus, to new ways of creating soul.
The spiritual path requires determination and the courage to begin to really see what’s going on. To challenge the accepted and explore new territory. Our egos naturally resist moving away
from the familiar — even when it’s the path to freedom.
